September 2002 | Editor’s Note

Green City, Good Vibes

In our April issue we told you about mayor Richard Daley’s desire to make Chicago the greenest city in America. We wrote about the philosophy and work of architect William McDonough who is working with the city toward that goal. And, with help of many local leaders in the environmental and sustainability community, we pitched an eleven-point plan that outlined our suggestions for greening Chicago. Since our plan was written in the form of a letter to Bill McDonough, he has responded in kind.

As passionate as we are about protecting the environment, fostering sustainability, encouraging the use of complementary healthcare, and promoting organic foods and products, we do know how to have fun. What better way to celebrate the diversity that is so crucial to a healthy planet than by attending one of the many performances presented by the Chicago World Music Festival 2002?

This fourth annual event will take place September 20-29 at several venues. Some concerts are free, others are $12 or less. You’ll find a wide variety of artists on the festival’s Web site. We are one of the sponsors of Portuguese fado singer Cristina Branco, who will perform September 26 and 27. — Ross Thompson
