Eolo Perfido
Artist’s statement (translated from Italian):
“I arrived at photography quite late in my life, but fortunately, passion has no time limit. I first picked up a camera when I was 28, with little idea that I would soon decide to never put it down again.
“Photography has become something that goes quite beyond simply capturing an image — and it has deeply changed how I experience life and those around me. I like to photograph people, and I attempt to improve my sensitivity on a daily basis so that I am able to delve more deeply into their personalities.
“I was born in Cognac, France in 1972. I have a wonderful family, a few good friends and a girlfriend that I love. I live and work in Rome.
“I am convinced that trying to understand America today means confronting the paradoxes and incongruence that delineate it — the differences between north and south, the opulence of a liberal democratic society and the poverty of those who have not been able to partake in that success.
“America, the country of equal opportunities and individual freedoms, the multi-ethnic nation built by the work of millions of immigrants, was also grown with the blood of death sentences and revolutions. America, with its aspirations of greatness and justice, is the same country that sends its young to fight wars where they don’t belong, the same country that has turned legitimate governments upside down.
“But I am not anti-American. Perhaps because I often visit the United States, I have been fascinated with Americans, and their way of looking at the world. It appeals to me to think that every democratic country is the mirror of its people. Thus America is the Americans.
“Today the world looks at America more like an enemy to pull down than a model to imitate. In this series of photos, I’ve attempted to highlight the decadence of the American dream, a decadence that manifests in ways both obvious and obscure.”
