2008: Matters in General
For someone like me, the prospect of a new year generates lists and lists of lists. So many action items — personal and professional — did not get addressed in 2007. Now I have the leftovers from 2007 (maybe a few from 2006) and so many more for 2008! It all seems overwhelming. Though, I cannot even say I am diligently working on the path to enlightenment. I just want to be a better person.
It is a journey for all of us; I am not a guru nor do I think myself extraordinarily wise in spiritual matters, matters of the heart, social matters, or matter on a quantum level. What has been particularly enlightening to me that I am bringing forward from 2007 is this: There are an awful lot of other people like me. I have met extraordinary people working with our media company, people who read our various on-line and print publications, and the bevy of people who work with me in this business, along with the tried-and-true loyal advertisers and our up-and-rising comrades in the LOHAS community. You are all my teachers. You reading this short note, are partially responsible for my spiritual and social enlightenment. None are perfect, some do not even try, but all contribute to my growth. Likewise, when you look around, I bet you will find the same is true in your life.
So what can I do; what can we do to make 2008 more enlightening for each other? First, let’s keep the lists short and embrace our macro and microcosmic communities. The Universal English Dictionary describes a community as ‘a society or body of persons living in the same place, having the same rights, privileges, and interests, and acknowledging the same laws.’ LOHAS, the acronym for lifestyles of health and sustainability, is not simply a demographic with marketing potential. We are the living LOHAS community.
Every individual who has picked up one of our publications has the potential to be plugged into and celebrate this social movement. We make the differences in our community on a macro-level by making eco-wise purchases, supporting our geographically common businesses, taking lifestyle enriching classes, seminars, workshops and retreats, being compassionately supportive of our not-for-profit establishments, and being involved for positive social and political change. On a micro-level, the difference comes when we plug into the true paradigm, when we practice what we learn to better ourselves and our families, chosen and biological, and when we share information one-to-one.
I will close with this dedication: All of us at Conscious Choice magazine and our related companies are (and will continue to be) filled with gratitude for each other and every single individual who touches one of our LOHAS vehicles. Thank you, and make 2008 matter!
