Sustainable Design Consultant Anthony Corso has always loved art and science. After a childhood spent connecting with the natural world, he eventually found himself interested in the impact of the environment on human health. A biology/pre-medicine degree led Corso to field ecology work, which in turn convinced him to pursue a graduate degree in architecture. “I spent a great deal of time trying to figure out how to combine my art and scientific knowledge into beautiful, legible, culturally relevant and sustainably built works,” he said. After stints in both Germany and Australia, Corso eventually landed in Chicago, where he now works for OWP/P and hopes to change the world through design. (owpp.com).
Top three architectural sites in Chicago
One of my favorite architectural features of Chicago is the neighborhood itself. Each one has its own unique character that evolves with people living their day-to-day lives. Another favorite is Millennium Park. It embodies the intersection of building and landscape that makes one realize the real power and importance of urban design. Lastly, I can’t talk about great Chicago architecture without mentioning the role the skyscraper has played and continues to play in the city of Chicago.
Best way to spend a work break
Although I certainly strive for balance in my daily life, aside from rare jaunts up to the office roof deck, my only downtime seems to be my commute via foot, bicycle or scooter.
Favorite fall time activity
Fall is our last chance to enjoy outdoor activities before we all dig in for another winter. I spend as much time outside as possible — bike riding by the lake, spending an evening with friends, or taking the dog to Montrose beach for some dog-frenzied fun.
Where I go to draw inspiration
My current project’s job site. The owner’s goals and the intended function of the space drive certain requirements, but the site is what inspires design. There is no better way to realize the true potential of a place than by getting to know the site, its history, community context and the natural flows of energy.
My favorite sustainable design project
One my most fulfilling projects has been my work on the Chicago Green Homes Program. Working to better understand and utilize green building design strategies and technologies in order to have a measurable impact on the lives of building occupants and on the environment has been an inspirational experience.
What people would be surprised to learn about Chicago and sustainable architecture
I think people would be surprised to know that they can live a comfortable life and decrease the size of their ecological footprint.
