Writer Guidelines
Freelancers write a large percentage of our copy and we are always open to hearing your ideas. Please review our pitch guidelines below.
About Us: Conscious Choice examines developments in alternative health care, nutrition, ecology, the environment, green businesses and sustainable development, urban planning, spirituality, personal growth, social justice, progressive politics, and renewable energy, among the many topics we have covered in our many years. The articles we publish are intended to help our readers build active, balanced, and conscious lives.
We prefer thoughtful, well-researched articles with an informed and upbeat tone. We favor a narrative approach in which “story-telling” is emphasized. We welcome investigative reports, personal interviews, and essays with a philosophical bent.
Conscious Choice focuses on issues local to Chicago and, to a lesser degree, the Midwest. We do publish stories of general interest such as pieces on non-toxic sunscreens, yoga poses and our “Life, the Universe and Everything” essays. We generally do not cover events after the fact. We limit our book reviews to nonfiction books within our areas of interest, and when possible like to highlight local authors or preview authors’ visits to Chicago.
All queries and story pitches should be submitted via email to the Editor. Please do not mail hard copies, as they are a waste of time, paper and expense. Initial pitches should take the form of an abstract and be no longer than two paragraphs detailing the story and the direction the writer intends to take, while providing any relevant information, including links, sources and interview subjects. Initial pitches should also include the writer’s bio. If we are interested in the story, we will request further information and two or three of the writer’s best clips. We try to respond within 90 days, but due to the large volume of requests, we sometimes can’t respond to every query and pitch.
We accept features in a variety of lengths from 200 to 2,000 words, plan issues 4-6 months in advance, and pay within 30 days of the month of publication.
Payment Structure: Typical payments range from $50 to $600, with more consideration given for longer pieces, clean copy and writers who supply usable art and have an established track record with us.
Kill fees: Kill fees are 50 percent of the original fee that was offered. No kill fee is paid if this is your first assignment with us, and you are free to publish the work elsewhere.
Rights and Reprints: We ask for one-time print rights and non-exclusive perpetual Web site publishing rights. In addition, we request to be allowed to reprint your article in any of our three West Coast sister publications, and you will be paid one-third of the original fee for each sister publication that runs the story.
Once requested, send articles as an attachment, with the copy pasted in the body of the email. Articles should include full source lists with current phone and email addresses. Original photos and illustrations are welcome and may be submitted along with your article for consideration. Photos must be at least 300 dpi at the size the photo will run.
